Blooms

Snowdrops Galanthus nivalis, April 2018

This will be a short post this time around.

Kneeling on the cold sidewalk with my smartphone (yes, smartphone!) only a few inches from the ground, my neighbours probably had concerns about my sanity. But I wasn’t going insane (I promise), I was taking this photo, which brings me to two of the tips I would like to share about shooting great photos:

You CAN take great photos on a smartphone.

Don’t be afraid to get down on your knees (or up high) to capture the essence of the subject. Check out all your angles.

And a few more:

This photo was taken on my way home from work, so keep a sharp eye out around you (and your camera at the ready), you will never know when the inspiration will strike.

Also remember the rule of thirds, the line of blossoms runs horizontally across the top of the photo, one third of the way down. This puts them in an area of interest.

And one more for today:

Don’t be afraid to use contrast in your photo. I like the contrast between the fresh growth of the flowers against the greyed browns of last year’s grass. Lights against darks, a bright colour against a neutral tone are another two of many ways to create contrast in your photos.

Until next time, enjoy your art!
