Hey everyone, so sorry for not posting two weeks ago and being late posting this week. I have been taking a writing and illustration course and have been to my elbows in work for it. Hopefully it will improve my writing and drawing skills 🙂

This photo was taken about a year ago on a quick day trip to the Toronto Islands. It’s just a short ferry ride across the bay to Centre Island. The water was unusually high and the light was fading fast as we headed out to the Centre Island pier, but I did have enough time to take this shot and then head over to the pier to watch the sun go the rest of the way down.

Just a few quick tips for your photos:

Watch your verticals (and horizontals) to make sure they’re straight. Wonky angles can turn an amazing shot into a ho-hum one. Get your verticals as straight as possible and if they’re still a bit crooked it’s an easy fix in a variety of software programs.

When shooting photographs with reflections, such as over water, you have a decision to make. Do you want to emphasize the sky or the reflection? If you want to emphasize the sky, have it take up 2/3 of your shot (like above). If you want to emphasize the reflection, make it 2/3 of your photo. This looks more professional simply because it looks like you know what you want/what effect you want to create. If you are unsure which you want to emphasize, take pictures both ways and decide later.

And as always, dress for the weather. This was a quick shot on a walk through a park, but if you’re going to shoot outdoors, have a glance at the weather forecast for the area and dress appropriately.

Got to run. Enjoy your hobby!
